The Detriment of Freedom - Literature Essay Samples

People take freedom for granted, on many levels, but have they ever questioned whether freedom is bliss, or a curse? The Lamp at Noon illustrates the protagonist, Ellen’s internal conflicts about fleeing the dust-ridden, barren, prairie farm during the Great Depression, longing for freedom. All in fear for her baby’s well-being, she makes multiple proposals to her husband, Paul, regarding abandoning the farm and moving to the city with her father. Paul hardens, and refuses her offers. Meanwhile, their baby’s health falters and is a risk of dust asphyxiation. Ellen desperately seeks paths to protect their child, and ultimately runs away from the farm on foot with the baby. Paul finds her subsequent to the death of their son, huddled in the sand. With all hope lost, Paul prays for a better tomorrow. Sinclair Ross demonstrates the theme that the tempting freedom may not be the ideal choice through his usage of setting, foreshadowing, as well as his diction. Ross set s the stage for a desaturated story depicting of a conflicted couple longing to escape the barren Prairies during the 1930s Dust Bowls. The hideous sand storms of the Prairies during the Great Depression plays an essential role in the plot and the theme. Thistles and tumbleweeds—it’s a desert. You won’t have a straw this fall. You won’t be able to feed [the animals]. Please Paul, say we’ll go awayâ₠¬â€Ã¢â‚¬  (Ross 143). She pleads her husband to abandon their farm and depart for her father due to the atrocious conditions. From this, the reader can interpret that the setting fuels Ellen’s hopes of leaving and her compulsion for freedom. Ellen debated leaving due to the weather, resulting in her internal conflicts. â€Å"See Paul – I stand like this all day†¦ if only I could run!† (Ross 148). The weather has pushed Ellen to her extremes, leaving her with nothing to do all day and dreaming of freedom. As the reader can conclude, the setting of the short story is crucial to the development of the theme. The couple is metaphorically caged and isolated by the setting, hence their desire for freedom. Moreover, foreshadowing is a recurring literary device that elucidates on the theme. As illustrated through Ellen’s departure and the death of the couple’s unnamed son. Ellen’s disappearance was hinted at through her speech during the rising action, â€Å"I’m so caged! If only I could run!†(Ross 148). Ross hints subtly that Ellen will subsequently run away from the farm in pursue of freedom. Additionally, foreshadowing is also imminently present in when the author introduces Ellen and Paul’s son. Ellen is overcome with fear â€Å"that in the dust-filled air he might contact pneumonia† (Ross 141). Later on in the story, the reader is made known that he had perished due to Ellen’s desperate need for freedom. Her attempts of fleeing to the city by foot has taken the life of her son. Through Ross’ recurring use of foreshadowing, he exemplifies the idea that despite the temptation of freedom, it can be detrimental. Furthermore, Ross deliberately chose to use descriptive diction to illustrate imagery, emphasize on pathos, and to give the reader perspective on the characters. Extending the idea of isolation and hopes for freedom, Paul’s farm is notably seen as an isolated outpost erected out of nowhere. â€Å"†¦Beyond: obscuring fields and landmarks, the lower of dust clouds made the farmyard seem like an isolated acre, poised aloft above a somber void. At each blast of wind I shoot, as if to topple and spin hurtling with the dust-reel into space† (Ross 140). The farm is portrayed as an â€Å"isolated acre† (Ross 140). Through imagery, Ross illuminates the reason behind Ellen’s urge to escape into the city, yearning for freedom. Likewise, Ross inspires pathos and sympathy in the reader for the infant through his careful selection of words, â€Å"the child was quite cold. It had been in her arms, perhaps too frantic to protect him, or the smother of dust upon his throat and lungs† (Ross 150). Ross subtly makes it apparent that the child has perished in Ellen’s struggle to escape the dust-reel. In addition, to get a deeper understanding of a character, Ross gives the reader an in-depth view of Paul’s mind and to fathom his struggles. â€Å"He ran a long time – distraught and headlong as a few hours ago he had seemed to watch her run – around the farmyard, a little distance into the pasture – and then at a stumble down the road for help† (Ross 150). His words allow the reader to sense Paul’s struggles in search of Ellen, and to visualize his memories of her. Through Paul’s thoughts, Ross indicates that Paul is aware that Ellen’s departure will not end up advantageously. In essence, without Ross’ extensive vocabulary, the story would have been monotonous and emotionless. One can conclude that his usage of words and phrases are essential to the development of the theme. Concisely, as can be seen through the setting, the usage of foreshadowing, and the author’s careful choice of diction, Ross accentuates the idea that despite the constant temptation of freedom, it can also be detrimental. Some take freedom for granted, and some fight to earn themselves freedom, but is it really the best choice of action?

There are many beliefs that are thought of around the world as fact. I want to describe belief through the words of professionals, and each one has their own beliefs that others may disagree with. There are three topics that will be discussed by them including religion, luck, and belief itself, and I have a counter argument that describes why it is necessary to have strange beliefs such as religion. Behavioral Traps There are five behavioral traps. Those five behavioral traps are: time delay, investment, deterioration, ignorance and collective. We fall into some of these traps easily and on a daily bases, while some of us find that they are also easily avoided. I would like to define and give an example of each of the behavioral traps, before I discuss which I think is the easiest to fall for and the easiest to avoid. Time delay is momentary gratification that clashes with long term consequences (short term vs. ong term). An example is finding it hard to diet or exercise regularly (Plous, 1993). The ignorance trap is the negative behavior which are not understood or seen at the outset. An example would be: People, who smoked in the 19th Century, they didn’t realize that smoking led to lung cancer and if the information would have been available, many would never have begun to smoke in the first place (Plous, 1993). The collective trap involves more than one party. The example for this one is rush hour traffic. Here everyone prefers to drive at the same time, taking their own self interest into play and letting everyone suffer (Plous, 1993). The investment trap occurs when prior expenditures of time, money or other resources lead people to make choices they normally wouldn’t make. An example would be investing money on something to help out the community only to find out at 90% done that another company is doing the same thing but theirs is better, debating on whether to finish the other 10% or not (Plous, 1993). Deterioration trap is similar to the investment trap but the cost and affect occur over time. An example for this trap is a heroin addict. You do it to get that great feeling but then your body becomes tolerant to the drug and you then up the dose to get that same great feeling, and then you’d rather take the drug to avoid withdrawal symptoms. So what started as a pleasurable feeling ends up in a nightmare of dependence (Plous, 1993). Those are the five behavioral traps, I studied and read because to a point they all are easy to fall into, but one that I know I have troubles with and that most people have fall easily to is the time delay trap. How many of us have tried diet after diet and exercise after exercise and end up not sticking to the plan. That’s what the time delay trap does to you. â€Å"Any situation in which short term consequences run counter to long term consequences can turn into a time delay trap† (Plous, 1993). Another example of the time delay trap could be the apples in the Garden of Eden, because the apple is regarded as bait and is the ultimate temptation with its entrapping consequences (Plous, 1993). As you look at the definitions in the earlier paragraph you might think that there really isn’t one that is easily avoided, but I believe that the deterioration is that one. I believe this because this trap takes time to occur/fall into, while with the other traps they seem more likely easier to fall for. The reason deterioration take more time than the others is because it produces behavior that may seem absurd or self-destructive to others whom haven’t seen the situation evolve. (Plous, 1993). Just like the heroin addiction, your body eventually gets use to all the things you are doing and you think you need more because you aren’t getting the same affect. So over time your body takes a beating and starts to be self destructive and so on. For the time delay trap the person wants to exercise and/or diet, but something keeps stopping you. The long term consequences for not exercising and/or dieting could result in health problems and obesity. I just happen to be one of those people. For months I have been planning to exercise more, but I always end up finding an excuse not to and then it only leads to me now being healthy or losing the weight that I have put on in the mean time. The thing that is striking about the time delay trap is that relative is that you end up with small pains and pleasures in the short run, will produce behavior that is devastating maybe even lethal in the long run. (Plous, 1993). Like for example smoking, it’s a short term pleasure but in the long run you can get cancer. We never really think that the things we do/ could be considered as a trap. We just go on day by day either eventually doing something about what we have been putting up with or just deal with the long term consequence. As a result, it provides enough opportunities for the employees to understand each other education, values and perspective. (2013) have also highlighted the fact that excessive bonding among the employees sometime also creates difficulties for the organizations to initiate any change in the operation process. As a result, I believe it might also create negative impact on the performance level of the organization. In order to motivate the employees, I believe HR management of organizations will have to focus on utilizing different strategies or models to ensure productivity of the organization remains at the optimum level. For that reason, I feel that HR management need to focus on performance analysis, promotion, appraisal and addition benefits to ensure motivational level of the employees remains at the desired level. Melin-Gonzlez et al. (2015) have highlighted specific factors including relationship between employees and managers, attention and encouragement for maintaining the performance level at the desired order. I believe it highlighted the fact that developing trust level towards the organizational rules and regulations can actually help organizations to motivate employees to give their best in pressure situation. As a result, it eventually helps to enhance the performance level of the organization (Huang and Rundle-Thiele 2014). Conversely, I feel that if HR management does not perf orm their provided responsibilities, it will create direct adverse impact on the group performance perspective. Hungry Hub will be company where quality will be the best and they will never compromise in quantity also. They balance both of them in a well-defined manner. When the manger wants certain change in the burgers or any other product related with Hungry Hub they will form a sequence and strictly follow the steps to get a better product. Many tools are used to form steps and thus changing the product in attractive way and also improving the taste of the burger (Keep, 2004). Process mock up is very necessary in process of production and also have certain things like time management. If there is pro per management in time less waiting lines are there and customers are also happy. This part is called simulation and is good for planning. If a product has not been changed regularly the customers are bored with the product and move with the new product but here in Hungry Hub the company give lots of changes on the product like taste, shapes and even compromise with the cost to attract their customer so that they remain for them forever.
